Chainsaw Sharpeners
A chainsaw sharpener consists of a frame, a file guide carriage and a guide bar attached to the frame. There is a bearing member that protrudes from the guide bar and is inserted between the bearing surfaces. The bearing member has an opening that is in alignment with the axis and a second, larger opening overlapping the first.
The chain has 5 basic parts. There is the left-hand cutter, right-hand cutter, tie strap, drive link and rivet. The cutters are the part of the chainsaw that slice and remove wood. They are plated with a thin, tough coating of industrial chrome. It is a good idea to brush or wash off dirty areas before cutting timber. This is not always possible; this is where chainsaw sharpeners come into play.

Chainsaw sharpeners should be used when the chain will no longer pull down through cutting. If you have to apply more pressure than usual when cutting wood, then it is time to sharpen the chain. Choosing to replace the chain is an option; but a chainsaw sharpener would be the less expensive way to go. Depending on the method you use when sharpening, there are a few types of chainsaw sharpeners to choose from:

Handheld Round File – is the sharpening method most commonly used when on a tight budget. Options when choosing this type of sharpener will depend on the size of the chainsaw. The round file is a manual tool that will need precision and control so that the cutting angle of the chain is not disturbed.

Bar Mounted Guide – is used by placing the saw on a workbench or table. The guide will need to be mounted and secured to the bar of the chainsaw. The knobs will need to be set to the chainsaw specifications; which will include the filing and depth angle. After this is done, apply the file to the chainsaw. Wear safety glasses, gloves, etc., when using this method as to not be hurt by flying shavings.

Electric Chainsaw Sharpeners – are a common chainsaw sharpening tool among professionals. This method of sharpening your chainsaw is easy and a time-saver when completing a project. There are a large variety of options to choose from with electric chainsaw sharpeners. There are a variety of sizes that will fit any budget. It is advisable to wear protective gear when using this method as well.
